KINGSTON — The Port Angeles girls took care of business with a commanding 53-31 victory over Kingston, grabbing a share of second place n the Olympic League.
It was the sixth straight win for the Roughriders (11-3 in league) and the 10th out of their past 11 games. After a 1-3 start to the season, Port Angeles will go in to the postseason with a 14-6 record. The Riders are ranked No. 14 in the state in Ratings Percentage Index and they should get a high seed at the district tournament and a home playoff game.
In those six straight wins, the Riders’ defense has allowed just 26.7 points per game.
The game was actually close early as the Buccaneers gave the Riders trouble just like they did in a game earlier this season in Port Angeles. The Riders went in to the half up just 22-17, but blew the game open with a 22-5 third quarter.
“The first half was close largely due to our low shooting percentage, particularly in the second quarter — 4-18 [on] field goals, 22 percent, and 0-4 free throws,” said coach Michael Poindexter. “Teanna Clark and Lexie Smith carried us offensively in the first half, scoring 16 of our 22 first-half points. Lindsay Smith then scored 12 of her game-high 17 in the third quarter.”
Lindsay Smith had a double-double, adding 11 rebounds. Clark finished with 14 points and five assists, while Lexie Smith had 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Riders had a 23-9 advantage in offensive rebounds.
“Becca Manson had an outstanding defensive game, picking up five steals, preventing drives, and contesting shots well. Lindsay Smith, Lexie Smith, and Cayleigh Alward led a strong rebounding effort,” Poindexter said. Alward contributed nine rebounds.
Now, Port Angeles waits to see who won Tuesday night between 10-3 North Kitsap and 13-0 Bainbridge. A Bainbridge win and the Riders get sole possession of second place and possibly a higher seed at district.

Sequim 57, Bremerton 33
BREMERTON — The Sequim girls basketball team ended their season on a high note, crushing Bremerton 57-33 on the road.
”The girls played well and had fun tonight were able to make a few baskets,” said coach Joclin Julmist.
Gracie Chartraw led the team with 16 points, while Libby Turella had a good all-around game with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Hailey Wagner had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Taylor Heyting had a big game with 16 rebounds, five steals and four points. Manuela Valle had five points, four steals and four assists.
Sequim finished the season 3-11 in the Olympic League and 4-14 overall.
”We are going to miss our seniors and Manuela,” Julmist said. “Thank you guys for your commitment to the program and your teammates.”
