GIRLS BASKETBALL: Riders hold court defensively against Olympic

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles’ defense powered the Roughriders to a 45-15 pasting of Olympic in an Olympic League home win Thursday.

“We missed several inside shots in the first half, but we played sound defense to get to our 21-7 halftime lead,” coach Michael Poindexter said. Our passing and movement improved in the second half, but we still struggled with our field goal-percentage [26-percent].

“We were finally able to rely on our defense to produce some points in the third quarter as we got steals that produced some lay-ins to get us going.”

The Riders forced 29 turnovers and only gave the ball back 11 times.

“Paige Mason had a good game on the inside of our zone defense, picking up six steals,” Poindexter said.

“Piper Williams had a personal-best five assists. Our defensive rebounding was a solid teamwide effort.”

Anna Petty led the Riders with nine points and Lexie Smith posted eight points, six rebounds and three steals.

Port Angeles (8-2, 8-7) will look to even up the season series with Bainbridge at home on Tuesday.

Without Petty and guard Izzy Felton, the Riders fell 33-25 to the Spartans on the road on Dec. 15.
