GIRLS BASKETBALL: Riders dispatch Knights with ease

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles put on a full-court pressure defense early on its way to a large first-quarter lead and eventually a 73-24 blowout of Bremerton in an Olympic League 2A Division girls basketball game.

“Our first-quarter lead was the result of good full-court pressure defense, with scoring coming both inside and outside,” Roughriders coach Michael Poindexter said of Wednesday’s game. “We pressed for only about five minutes, then played fairly effective half-court man-to-man and zone defenses for the rest of the game.”

Emilia Long led Port Angeles with 17 points and fellow freshman Jaida Wood added 11. Sophomore Mikkiah Brady pitched in with nine points and seniors Cheyenne Wheeler (seven), Gracie Long (six) and Brennan Gray and Devin Edwards (five apiece) also helped in the big win.

“All players contributed to a solid team effort, and we were able to maintain intensity and focus throughout the game,” Poindexter said.

“We missed too many inside shots (we shot just 36% from two-point range), but we hit well from outside (11-25 from 3-point land).”

The Riders (3-1, 7-3) are tied with Kingston (3-1, 8-3) for second place in the Olympic 2A but have the upper hand on the Buccaneers due to a head-to-head win. Port Angeles travels to Olympic (2-2, 3-7) tonight.
