PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls basketball team is off to an 0-2 start, but they’re getting ready for league by playing some tough 3A and 4A schools to begin the season.
A third-quarter rally by the Roughriders wasn’t enough to overcome a slow start Saturday against 3A Bonney Lake in Port Angeles’ home opener Saturday. The Riders lost 61-51.
“We had a rough first half both in terms of shooting [20 percent for the half] and in terms of foul trouble for key players, which caused us to get out of our man-man press and into a couple of zone looks,” said coach Michael Poindexter.
“[Bonney Lake] post player Jazmyn Shipp had eight of her team-high 21 points in the second quarter, as we struggled to find ways to deny her the ball,” Poindexter said. “We went back to the press in the second half, producing quite a few turnovers, but we still were not able to shoot well enough to dig out of the first-half deficit.”
Port Angeles was down 31-14 at the half, but with a 23-point third quarter, it made the game competitive going into the fourth, down 46-37.
Eve Burke led the Riders with 21 points of her own, with 20 of them coming in the second half. Poindexter said Bailee Larson had a solid all-around game with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals to go along with four points. Jayde Gedelman also contributed nine points.
The Riders next play at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Bremerton in their Olympic League 2A opener.

JOYCE — Crescent had four players in double figures in a 77-12 win Saturday over Lake Quinault.
The Loggers got 20 points from Kaylen Mason, 16 from JoCy Kazlahskas, 12 from Naomii Sprague and 11 from Makiah Clark.
Crescent next plays at 5 p.m. Tuesday at home against Quilcene.
