GIRLS BASKETBALL: Quilcene falls to sixth seed after loss, hosts playoff game Monday

PUYALLUP — Quilcene’s girls basketball team dropped to sixth place in the SeaTac League after a 64-49 loss to Mount Rainier Lutheran.

The Rangers (5-5, 13-7) will host a loser-out SeaTac League tournament play-in game against the league’s seventh seed Monday.

Their opponent will be either Shorewood Christian or Seattle Lutheran, who are tied at 4-5 in the league standings.

“[We] entered shorthanded, as shooting guard Allison Jones sat out with a sprained ankle,” Rangers coach Briana Weller said.

“We had trouble containing Mount Rainier’s three perimeter shooters. These girls were on fire and didn’t miss much from outside.”

Weller said Quilcene’s half-court man defense allowed the team to whittle away at the Hawks’ lead.

But an inability to get the ball in the hoop from up close was the Rangers’ downfall.

“We missed a lot of high-percentage shots. [Our] two-point shooting percentage on the night was rough at 28 percent,” Weller said.

Megan Weller scored 18 points with six assists and three steals.

Katie Love added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Sammy Rae had 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
