PORT ANGELES — Early defensive pressure from Port Angeles was pivotal in a 58-34 Olympic League girls basketball win over North Kitsap.
“This was one of our best games of the year, overall, against a team with a solid group of guards,” coach Michael Poindexter said. “North Kitsap was ranked No. 13 in the WIAA RPI coming into the game, while we were 14th.”
Eve Burke, Anna Petty and Bailee Larson all had excellent first quarters.
“Our full-court press was successful in getting us off to a good start,” Poindexter said. “Eve Burke had 18 of her 33 points in the first quarter, while Anna Petty had six rebounds and five assists that quarter. Bailee Larson had four assists in the quarter. The trio of Eve, Anna and Bailee had a great defensive night.”
Burke finished with 33 points, nine rebounds and six steals.
Larson had 10 points, six assists and six steals while Petty scored eight, with eight rebounds and seven steals.
“Coming off the bench, Izzy Felton had a strong game defensively and rebounded well,” Poindexter said.
Port Angeles (8-1, 9-4) visits Kingston (5-5, 7-5) on Tuesday.

SILVERDALE — The Olympic-League leading Wolves controlled the game inside to dispatch Class 1A Klahowya in a nonleague road game Friday.
“The girls played one of the best games of the season so far,” coach Joclin Julmist said. “The defense was good for most of the game and we kept our turnovers down and were able to get the ball inside to Jelissa [Julmist] and Jolene [Vaara] who combined for 40 points tonight and grabbed 26 rebounds between them, 13 each.
Vaara totaled 24 points, 13 rebounds, seven steals, four assists and three blocked shots.
Point guard Hannah Bates added 12 points, three assists and two steals.
“Hannah Bates was great at controlling the tempo of the game and also played great defense,” Julmist said.
“Klahowya had a perfect atmosphere, they had the band and the gym was packed with their fans and we had our JV team and about four parents that made the trip to the game.”
Sequim (10-0, 13-2) hosts Olympic (0-10, 1-13) on Tuesday.
Forks 85, Clallam Bay 28
FORKS — The Spartans’ reserves received nearly all the playing time in a matchup with the Bruins on Saturday.
“We have 12 girls in the program and they’ve all been working hard and we had some get some well deserved court time,” Forks coach David Hurn said.
“We haven’t been able to schedule any JV games since December, so it was good to watch them play and see their hard work pay off.”
Chloe Gaydeski led Forks with 17 points while Brynn Daniels added 13.
Abby Flores had 18 for the Bruins.
Forks (7-2, 9-5) is off until a game with Chief Leschi Thursday.
