GIRLS BASKETBALL: Neah Bay romps over Mt. Vernon Christian

MOUNT VERNON — The Neah Bay girls got 16 points from Ruth Moss and 15 from Courtney Swan and clamped down hard on defense in the second half in a 69-43 win over Mount Vernon Christian to remain undefeated.

The Red Devils were balanced on offense, with six girls scoring at least eight points. Jazzlyn Yallup and Patience Swan each scored nine while Gina McCaulley and Lalia Greene each scored eight.

The game was still close at the half, with Neah Bay holding a 34-29 lead at the break. But, the Red Devils gave up just 14 points in the second half, including four in the fourth quarter, to win going away as Neah Bay scored 35 in the final two quarters.

Neah Bay (2-0) next plays at Sequim at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Bainbridge 49, Sequim 29

SEQUIM — The Sequim girls were fairly close at the half against 3A Bainbridge in a nonleague game, but were undone by a scoreless fourth quarter, falling 49-29.

The Wolves were down just 24-18 at the half in Saturday night’s game, but were outscored 25-11 in the second half.

“We had a rough showing against Bainbridge. They played extremely well all game and we had no counter for their zone defense and quick hitting offense. Our girls fought hard to cut their once 12-point first half lead to six at halftime and then Bainbridge stepped up on defense,” said coach Larry Brown.

“We went very cold in the fourth and could not hit open shots resulting in a zero-point fourth quarter. We will learn from this game and get better every day,” Brown said.

Sequim (1-0, 2-1) next plays Neah Bay at home at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.

LACEY — Quilcene had 14 steals and 25 offensive rebounds in a 33-7 league-opening win over Sea-Tac B rival Pope John Paul II.

“Freshman Marissa Kieffer and Brittney Beukes really stepped up in this game,” said coach Briana Weller. “[Beukes] at 5-foot-3 is tiny but she is so quick and scrappy on defense. The effort and energy that she exudes is contagious to her teammates.”

Kieffer led the team with 13 points in Thursday’s win. Point guard Abby Weller had 11 rebounds and eight steals. Sydney Brown had 11 rebounds and three steals, while Gina Brown at the post grabbed six rebounds and had five assists.

Quilcene (1-0, 2-1) has three league home games this week. The Rangers play Northwest Yeshiva at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Tacoma Baptist at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday and Evergreen Lutheran at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
