SPOKANE — The Neah Bay girls brought home a sixth-place trophy from the Class 1B state basketball tournament at Spokane Arena.
Neah Bay senior Cierra Moss broke the 1B state tournament record with 40 points in the Red Devils’ 72-40 rout of Taholah on Friday.
Saturday, Moss’ record was broken and the Neah Bay was routed by Wilbur-Creston 84-46 in the fourth/sixth-place game.
The Red Devils jumped Taholah early, staking a 34-13 halftime lead. Moss closed the opening half with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, giving her 19 points in the opening two quarters.
Moss and Neah Bay continued to roll after intermission, finishing with a 25-12 fourth quarter, with Moss breaking the tournament record in the closing minutes.
Moss made 13 of 23 shots from the field, 5 of 8 from 3-point range and 9 of 11 at the free-throw line. She also grabbed 20 rebounds, which was three short of another tournament record.
Faye Chartraw added 14 points and 17 rebounds for the Red Devils.
In Saturday’s fourth-place game, Wilbur-Creston raced to a 10-2 lead, but Neah Bay caught up to tie the game at 16 going into the second quarter.
The Wildcats took off again while the Red Devils remained grounded, and Wilbur-Creston led 45-24 at halftime.
Jessica Boyer led the Wildcats’ offensive attack and finished with 42 points to break the record Moss set less than 24 hours earlier.
Moss scored 22 points to top Red Devils.
In the opening round of the state tournament Thursday, Tekoa-Oakesdale pulled away from Neah Bay in the second half to win 56-43 and relegate the Red Devils to the consolation bracket.
Chartraw led Neah Bay with 15 points and Moss had 13, while eighth-grader Gina McCaulley chipped in eight points.
Moss is the lone graduating senior for the young Red Devils. She finishes the season with a scoring average of 25.1 points per game.
