GIRLS BASKETBALL: All-Peninsula team announced

Mechelle Nisbet, Chimacum (Senior) Guard — MVP Olympic League 1A MVP averaged 15 points, 5.5 rebounds and an eye-popping 5.9 steals per game for Cowboys.

CHIMACUM — Chimacum senior guard Mechelle Nisbet heads up the 2016-17 All-Peninsula Girls Basketball Team.

Nisbet was selected All-Peninsula MVP by area coaches and the sports staff of the Peninsula Daily News.

Fellow team members are: Nizhoni Wheeler, Port Angeles; Ella Christiansen, Sequim; Tristin Johnson, Neah Bay; Kaitlyn Meek, Port Townsend; Cheyenne Wheeler, Port Angeles; Adrienne Haggerty, Sequim; Jaz Apker-Montoya, Port Townsend; Allison Jones, Quilcene; Rian Peters, Forks, Skyler DeMatties, Forks and Miriam Wonderly, Clallam Bay.

Clallam Bay coach Michael Maines was picked as the coach of the year after guiding the Bruins back to the state tournament for the first time in 11 seasons.

Skyler DeMatties, Forks (Senior) Guard Second-team All-Evergreen League 1A choice showed heart and determination as a 4-year starter for Spartans.

Port Angeles freshman Elyse Brown competes in the Roughriders' Olympic League home gymnastics meet at the Klahhane Gymnastics Center in Port Angeles on Monday.
