FORKS SOCCER: Spartans go the distance with Ducks in penalty-kick shootout

FORKS — Eighty minutes of regulation play and two 5-minute overtime periods were not enough to produce a goal in Forks’ Central 2B League girls soccer match with Toutle Lake at home Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, no one scored last night, for either team. It was 0-0 after 80 minutes of regulation and 2 OT periods. The game was decided in a shootout, which Toutle Lake was able to capitalize on and come away with the shootout win,” coach Keith Weekes said.

“The girls fought hard and responded to everything they were asked to do. The game play and effort was great, but even when you try your best, the outcome gets away from you.”

Fighting through it

Weekes explained a little bit more about the challenges the Spartans have fought through this season.

“We have 11 girls, sometimes less, so we never have subs,” Weekes said. “These girls have played every minute of every game all season. They are doing tremendous things in helping to change a program that has had its struggles.

“Even as coaches, we have to step back and remind ourselves that they have done all of this in half a season. It won’t be a failure if they don’t make the state tournament this first year. These girls matter, and they are playing meaningful games that matter. It is a big mountain we are trying to climb, but the team is doing a great job of continuing to work at going up.”

Forks (2-1, 4-4) visits Onalaska on Monday.
