FORKS SOCCER: Short-handed Spartans battle Ocosta to 1-1 tie

FORKS — The Forks soccer team managed to battle Ocosta to a 1-1 tie despite only having 10 players available for the match.

“The first half was probably one of the best teamwork and cooperation efforts the girls have shown all season,” said coach Keith Weekes. “We have had great flashes of a couple of things or a couple of individuals, but that half, everyone was running together.”

The Spartans got up 1-0 in the first half when Molly Hampton scored a goal on a pass from Jade Blair.

“In the second half, Ocosta came out fast and furious, continuous nonstop attacking and action,” Weekes said.

“Ocosta was able to even the score on a bit of a chaos goal. Our defense became a bit jumbled and Ocosta did what they were supposed to and were able to get one in,” he said.

Weekes said the Spartans kept playing hard until the final whistle.

“The team is getting to the point where they are truly playing as a team, every single player in the field steps up and contributes,” he said. “As we approach the final stretch of the regular season, we just hope the fight we’ve seen carries on.”

The tie snapped a three-game losing streak for the Spartans, though two of those losses were by one goal. Forks (4-6-1) next plays at Toledo (7-3-2) today.
