SEQUIM — The Sequim football MVP has signed a letter of intent to play football at George Fox University, an NCAA Division III college in northern Oregon.

Cowan, who was the Olympic League 2A Division football MVP and was the league offensive MVP as a sophomore made all-Olympic League all four years of his high school career. Cowan broke Drew Rickerson’s previous all-time passing yardage (4,731) and career passing touchdown records (45) for Sequim this season, finishing his career with 6,845 yards passing and 64 TD passes.

This past year, Cowan led the Wolves to an Olympic League 2A Division championship. He threw for 2,018 passing yards and 25 TD passes his senior year. And he also rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns.

Cowan said he’s interested in getting an engineering degree and that George Fox has a solid engineering program. He also liked that it was a Christian school. He also liked that it’s not far away from Sequim.

“It seemed like a nice fit for me,” he said.

Cowan has interest in either civil or mechanical engineering. His first year at George Fox, he plans to “take classes in a little bit of everything” to see which kind of engineering he will specialize in.

George Fox is located in Newberg, Ore., just southwest of Portland in a small triangle of three private colleges all within 20 miles of each other, the other two colleges being Linfield in McMinnville and Pacific in Forest Grove. The George Fox Bruins play in the NCAA Div. III Northwest League, which includes Linfield, Pacific Lutheran and University of Puget Sound.

George Fox finished 6-4 last year. Cowan said he was recruited as a quarterback and fully intends to get into the lineup next season for the Bruins.

“We’ll see. I’m here to compete,” he said.

Cowan also played basketball for the Wolves and competes in track and field. Last year, he finished fourth at the state 2A track meet in the javelin.
