FIRECRACKER CLASSIC: Wilder Junior struggles against older squads

No-hit by Shoreline Royals 18U

PORT ANGELES — Wilder Junior was stung by some older competition in a pair of Dick Brown Memorial Firecracker Classic contests, falling 9-5 to Cascade Baseball Club’s Green team Friday morning and were the victims of a five-inning perfect game by Shoreline Royals 18U in an 11-0 loss on Thursday night.

The Junior squad spotted CBC Green a 5-0 lead after the first two innings and couldn’t recover in Friday’s contest.

Wilder scratched one back in the third when Trae Hanan, Ian Smithson and Bryce DeLeon all drew walks to load the bases. Lincoln Bear’s RBI infield single scored Hanan, but Wilder hit into a double play to end the inning prematurely.

Wilder cut the lead to 7-5 after six innings, plating four in the bottom of the sixth. Easton Fisher drove in a run on a sharply hit ball to third base, Hanan came through with a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and Smithson added an RBI single, but the Juniors couldn’t come any closer, going down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Shoreline’s Leyton Brunni and Ethan Swenson combined on the five-inning perfect game.

Brunni, a recent Everett High School graduate, struck out four in three innings.

Swenson, a recent Mountlake Terrace graduate, fanned three in two innings.
