EXTREME SPORTS PARK: Sprint boats return to Port Angeles this weekend

PORT ANGELES — The American Sprint Boat Pro Racing Series returns to the Extreme Sports Park outside of Port Angeles this Saturday and Sunday.

It is the third set of races for the ASBR this year, with the series making a visit to the Extreme Sports Park in late July, then moving to a weekend at Ontario, Ore., in August. Races were expanded to two days because of an increase in the number of teams.

Competitors from Washington, Idaho, Florida, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are expected to compete. ASBR is partnered with STIHL to bring the sport to the Olympic Peninsula. Popular YouTube racing personality “Cleetus McFarland” (Actual name Garrett Mitchell) is also scheduled to compete at the ESP again this weekend.

ASBR has also announced the acquisition of another sprint boat track venue at the Yakima County Fairgrounds for the 2024 season. This year, four races are being held at the ESP and Ontario.

Boats race in three classes — modified, 400 and unlimited — with qualifying races on Saturday and finals on Sunday.

The event begins from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday with a “Show and Shine” at the Elwha Food & Fuel on U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles. People can meet and greet the ASBR racing teams, check out some of the boats and get autographs and selfies. Food and drinks will be available at the Elwha Food Truck and inside Elwha Food & Fuel.

Qualifying races at the ESP begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. People can go to www.extremeportspark.net to purchase tickets, reserve camping spots and avoid long lines. Gates will open at 8:30 a.m. Camping opens today.

On Sunday, the elimination rounds will begin at 10 a.m.

People can watch the races live online at www.facebook.com/AmericanSprintBoatRacing or on YouTube at www.youtube.com/@ASBR-PRO-RACING-SERIES.
