PORT TOWNSEND — East Jefferson Athletic Director Shelby Box will be presented with the InSideOut Leadership Award later this week.
Box is the director of the combined athletic departments of Port Townsend and Chimacum School Districts, which entered a cooperative agreement in 2020 to create combined teams known as the East Jefferson Rivals.
The InSideOut Award is presented by the InSideOut Initiative, a national movement that trains athletic directors and coaches to become transformative leaders, creating a community of belonging for student-athletes’ social-emotional and character development. The Seattle Seahawks and the NFL Foundation also support the InSideOut Initiative.
Box has nearly 20 years of experience as a coach, athletic trainer, and mental performance coach.
Her stated mission is, “I lead to help coaches produce better humans by modeling kindness and reliability.” Box successfully completed the InSideOut professional learning series this spring.
“InSideOut has equipped me with the tools I need to transform our athletic department into a purpose based athletic department,” Box said. ”It has helped me introduce common language to my coaches and it has helped me be able to put into words and action the vision I have for our program.”
“Athletic administrators who participate in the InSideOut Initiative training learn effective strategies to create purpose from the InSideOut,” said Jody Redman, a former statewide athletics association leader, athletic administrator and co-founder of the InSideOut Initiative. “We are very excited to celebrate Shelby’s leadership and the intentional steps she has taken to provide purpose-based sports experiences to the students in her school community.”
InSideOut is now in its ninth year, and continues to create engaging content and effective strategies to support school communities’ nation-wide.
Box will be presented with the InSideOut Leadership Award at Thursday’s Port Townsend School Board meeting.
