DISTRICT TENNIS: Sequim’s Dietzman, Wiker win district title, off to state

BREMERTON — The Sequim duo of Kali Wiker and Jessica Dietzman won the West Central District 3 2A doubles’ tennis championship, coming from behind in the second set to win the championship match in a tough one 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) over Darija Maric and Jasmine Palaganas of Bremerton.

“They played well, that’s the first time this year they’ve had to face some adversity,” said coach Mark Textor.

Textor said the Sequim duo was down 5-2 in that second set, but were able to come back and grind out a win.

Deitzman and Wiker, who also won the Olympic League 2A championship, didn’t lose a single set at district, beating a Foster duo 6-0, 6-2 and beating the Kingston tandem of Emily Shaleen and Lily Beaulieu 6-2, 6-1.

Deitzman and Wiker move on to the state beginning on Friday, going up against Maya Becerra and Anna Marie Rutherford of Sedro-Woolley.

Textor said the duo “played the best tennis I’ve ever seen them play” at the Olympic League championship and remained solid at districts. “They get balls in play and stay aggressive,” he said.

Textor said it’s hard to say how far Deitzman and Wiker will go at state this year. Deitzman went to state last year with doubles partner Hannah D’Amico and that duo won a match, while losing two.

“This team has the grit to do some damage” at state, Textor said.
