RENTON — Port Angeles’ Mackenzie DuBois finished second in two events as the Roughrider girls finished fifth as a team at the West Central District 1A/2A Girls Swim and Dive competition this weekend.
DuBois, just a freshman, finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 3.28 seconds. She also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:35.84. Her teammate Kenzie Johnson finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.58.
How impressive was DuBois’ showing in her first year of high school swimming? She was beaten in both events by Brianna Hoffman of North Kitsap, who was a state champion last year in the 200 and second in the state in the 500. Hoffman beat DuBois by just three seconds in the 500 and two seconds in the 200.
Sequim’s Mia Coffman was third in the 500 with a time 5:37.1, just two seconds behind DuBois as this Olympic League trio dominated the race.
DuBois and Coffman had already posted state qualifying times in the 500-yard freestyle earlier this year.
PA had 135 total points to finish fifth. Sequim was eighth with 49 points and Port Townsend 10th with 41 points. Defending state champion North Kitsap won the district championship with 243 points.
The Roughriders’ Sage Hunter was sixth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.82 and Sequim’s Francesca Bargis was 10th with a time of 1:12.15 and Port Townsend’s Kaylee Barlow was 11th in 1:12.26.
Felicia Che of Port Angeles finished fifth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:20.77.
Roughriders Kiara Schmitt (27.22) and Emma Murray (27.46) finished fifth and sixth respectively in the 50 freestyle.
The Riders’ Anne Edwards was fourth in the 1-meter diving with 255.90 points. Port Angeles’ Johnson was sixth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 58.66, while Che was eighth at 58.76. Schmitt was 11th at 1:00.95 and Sequim’s Bargis was 12th at 1:01.54.
Sequim’s Swanson was eighth in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:19.31 and the Riders’ McClain was ninth in the same event in a time of 1:19.41.
The Redhawks’ Emilia Nunn was eighth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:00.23.
In the relays, the Port Angeles 200 freestyle team of Murray, Hunter, Adriana McClain and Schmitt finished fourth with a time of 1:49.87. Sequim’s 200 freestyle team of Sydney Swanson, Petra Bernsten, Eislynn Flood and Coffman finished 11th with a time of 1:58.81.
The Sequim 400 freestyle relay team of Lauren Sundin, Natalie George, Bargis and Coffman was seventh with a time of 4:15.13. Port Angeles got disqualified in this event.
The Port Townsend 200 freestyle relay team of Barlow, Veda Dosey, Nunn and Morgan Trail finished sixth with a time of 1:56.09. The same four Port Townsend girls finished seventh in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:07.75. Both Sequim and Port Angeles were disqualified in the 200 medley relay preliminaries.
The top six places in all events are allocations for the state 1A/2A meet and some individual times will be added to the state meet after all the district results from around the state are reviewed. Plus, several area girls had already posted state-qualifying times in some events earlier this season. The full slate of state qualifiers is expected to be released today.
The state 1A/2A swim and dive meet will be held Friday and Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
