DISTRICT GOLF: Raimey Brewer heading to state for Sequim

PA’s Austin Worthington wins second playoff in as many weeks

AUBURN — Sequim added another player to its state-bound girls golf contingent, while the Port Angeles boys placed an alternate on its already-strong four-player state squad in Class 2A West Central District golf tournament qualifying Tuesday at Auburn Golf Course.

Final scores were not available from the competition at the par-72 course.

The top six scores and two alternates advanced to state to join players who previously qualified directly to state at the Olympic League Championships last week.

Wolves’ sophomore Raimey Brewer qualified fifth in the girls district competition.

She will join Sequim seniors Ava Johnson and Emily Post at state at Liberty Lake Golf Course on Tuesday and Wednesday. Johnson and Post finished second and fifth overall at the league tournament.

Port Angeles’ Autumn Wilson-Rowland (fourth) and Claire Osterberg (fifth) had also already made it directly to the girls state tournament at the league championships.

Port Angeles junior Austin Worthington will serve as the district’s first alternate and will travel to state with the Roughriders’ four other state qualifiers at MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Although we weren’t able to pass our two Rider golfers through districts to the state tourney, Austin earned the first alternate spot, by winning his second sudden-death playoff in two weeks,” coach Bob Anderson said.

“He’ll join his four other teammates on the journey to Spokane next week. Kudos to our Cale Wentz for his heart and determination at districts; that ball just wouldn’t drop for him.

“His work ethic and dedication should pay off for him in the years ahead, as he’s a sophomore this year.

“We work this week to get our team’s names high up on the state tourney leaderboard next week.”

Port Angeles boys heading to state include Max Gagnon, second at the 2A league tournament; freshman Sky Gelder, who placed third and seniors Reid Schmidt (fourth) and Nate Anderson (fifth).

The squad will try and lift Port Angeles to a state trophy after a ninth-place finish as a team at state in 2023.
