TACOMA — Port Angeles’ Austin Worthington and Sequim’s Adrian Aragon qualified to move on the state 2A tournament, while Port Angeles girls Claire Osterberg and Mia Neff finished first and second at the district golf tournament at Allenmore Golf Course.
Aragon finished third at district with an 80 to qualify for state and Worthington was fifth with an 82. The top seven at district make state.
“Adrian got off to a rough start on the front nine, but really turned it around on the back,” said Sequim coach Greg Glasser.
A total of eight Port Angeles and Sequim boys and girls will be moving on to the state golf tournaments, which are on the west side of the Cascade Range this year. The boys 2A tournament will be at the Riverside Golf Club in Chehalis on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, while the girls tournament will be at the Tumwater Valley Golf Club in Tumwater on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Port Angeles’ Cale Wentz already qualified for state when he was fourth at the Olympic League championship a couple of weeks ago.
Winning district was Rainier Richardson of Bainbridge, who shot a 74. The cut for qualifying for state was 83. Coming up a bit short was Sky Gelder of Port Angeles, who shot an 89, finishing 10th, and Noah Myers, who shot a 92 and finished 11th.
In the girls’ meet, Osterberg shot a 101 and Neff a 104. It will be Osterberg’s fourth trip to state and Neff’s first. Neff birdied 16 to leapfrog several girls, and a great chip on 18 led to a tap-in bogey, said coach Michael DuPuis.
This duo will join teammate Autumn Wilson-Rowland, who had already qualified for state with her sixth-place finish at the Olympic League tournament at the end of April.
DuPuis said Malena Marquez had a chance for state, but her hopes died as she struggled on the back nine and ended up 11th with a 112.
Sequim’s Chloe Tweter finished fifth with a 106 and qualified for state. She will join teammate Raimey Brewer, who qualified for state at the league tournament two weeks ago.
