BREMERTON — Sequim’s Kendall Hastings won three matches to come in second place at the 2A West Central District 3 girls tennis tournament this weekend.
On Friday, Hastings beat Ange Gyan of Renton 6-0, 6-0, then followed up by beating Justine Bang of Sammamish 6-2, 6-3 to put herself into the district semifinals.
Hastings then beat Macy Furtwanger of Enumclaw 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. In the finals, she fell to Taraneh Khalighi of Sammamish 6-2, 6-1. Hastings will move on to play in the state 2A tennis championships.
Port Angeles singles player Liberty Lauer won one out of three matches at district. She lost to Furtwanger 6-1, 6-3, but came back to beat Lora Buena Venture of Foss 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 in a super tiebreaker. She lost to Bailey Walton of Olympic 6-4, 6-1.
Sequim’s Alexis Gale had a couple of close matches. She beat Delaney Brinkhaus of Steilacoom 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-3, then lost to Teegan DeVris of North Kitsap 6-3, 6-0.
In the consolation bracket, Gale lost to Sania Williams of Clover Park 4-6, 6-3, 10-8.
In doubles play, Sequim’s Jordan Hegtvedt and Malory Morey went 2-2 in the tournament. They won a match 6-1, 6-4 over a Frohar Azizi and Cindy Thai of Foster, then lost 6-2, 6-4 to Sarah Chianglin and Viv Khuu of Sammamish, bouncing back to beat Beckham Oaks and Olivia Cary of North Kitsap 6-2, 7-6, 7-3. Finally, they lost to Sydney Scribner and Jasmin Dumontel of Enumclaw 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, coming up one match short of a state bid.
The 2A state tennis meet begins Friday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.
