DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY: Sequim, Port Angeles and Port Townsend runners advance to state

TACOMA — Sequim and Port Angeles boys and girls cross country teams will compete as teams at the Class 2A State Championships in Pasco next Saturday after faring well at the Westside Classic district championship at American Lake Veterans Golf Course on Saturday.

Ash Francis won the boys individual district title for the Wolves with a time of 16 minutes, 44.6 seconds, nearly 18 seconds better than runner-up Andrew Simon of Kingston.

Murray Bingham of Sequim was third in 17:06.

The Sequim boys finished second with 65 points and Port Angeles (175) was fifth in the 16-team 2A competition.

The top six teams and top 42 individuals in both the boys and girls meets advanced to state.

On the girls side, White River (102 points) narrowly edged out Port Angeles (104) for the district championship. Sequim finished fourth with 136 points.

Gracie Long placed second for the Roughriders with a time of 19:59.7, behind race winner Courtney Gelmini of White River (19:16.5). Teammates Madelyn Dougherty (21:39.2); Lael Butler (21:46) and Ella Holland (21:48.3) finished 11th, 12th and 13th, respectively.

Sequim was led by the eighth-place finish of Morgan Bingham (21:12.1).

Port Townsend boys advance

TACOMA — The Redhawk boys finished second in the Class 1A Westside Classic and will race at state next Saturday.

The top two boys and girls teams and the top 14 individuals advanced to state.

Brennan LaBrie led Port Townsend with a third-place finish in 17:52.1.

Gabe Petrick was seventh for the Redhawks with a time of 18:42.

With a fourth-place finish in the six-team competition, Port Townsend’s girls missed out on running together at state.

But the Redhawks girls will have two individual representatives after Anika Avelino (21:42.3) and Ally Bradley (23:05.2) finished fifth and 13th respectively.
