PORT ANGELES — Wilder Senior had the tying and winning runs on base, but couldn’t push across a game-changing run in the Dick Brown Memorial Tournament championship game Sunday night.
Wilder Senior lost 7-6 to the WBC Colts Black squad. Earlier in the day, Wilder Sr. beat Lakeside BR 15-5 in the semifinals to qualify for the championship game.
“It was a lot of fun. The kids worked hard. We played some good ballclubs and saw some high-level baseball,” said seniors coach Zac Moore. “We were one pitch away,” from winning the championship.
Wilder Sr. went 3-2 in five games at the tournament.
Wilder took a lead into the sixth inning, but gave up four runs to the WBC Colts Black in the sixth inning and another run in the seventh to fall behind.
Landon Seibel got a rally started in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff triple. Elijah Flodstrom hit a popup that was dropped and Ezra Townsend walked, but Wilder Senior couldn’t get a big walk-off hit and left the tying and winning runs stranded.
Logan Olson finished 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a walk. Former Port Angeles Roughrider Wyatt Hall, who now plays at Skagit Valley College, was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Seibel scored a run to go along with his triple, and Flodstrom was 1-for-3 with an RBI, run and a walk.
Hall started the game, going two innings and allowing three earned runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out two. Colton Romero pitched well in relief, going 3⅓ innings, allowing two hits and two earned runs. He walked three and struck out four.
Against Lakeside BR, Wilder Sr. blew up for 17 hits with several players having multiple hits. Hall was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Seibel was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and three walks.
Hunter Robinson was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and Flodstrom was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs and a walk.
On the mound, Beckett Jarnagin started, going two innings and allowing one hit and three earned runs while striking out one. Flodstrom went 2⅔ innings, allowing five hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out one. Brian Guttormsen finished the game, getting a strikeout on three pitches.
Moore thanked all the volunteers who helped make the tournament a success. The weather cooperated until Sunday, when rain finally hit, but Moore said the grounds crew did a great job keeping the field in shape and there were no issues during the Sunday evening championship game.
