Saturday’s Game
Wilder Senior got huge contributions from its Sequim contingent at Volunteer Field on Saturday as Ethan Staples pitched a 98-pitch shutout, Bear blasted a three-run home run and Braydan White pitched a dominant 1⅓ innings of relief.
The game was locked in a 0-0 pitchers’ duel until the bottom of the fourth when Alex Angevine and White got on base with singles. Bear then crushed a two-strike pitch well over the left-field fence for a no-doubt home run.
“I was supposed to lay down a bunt and I wasn’t able to do it,” Bear said. “I have to make up for it.
“I just tried to put a good two-strike swing on it and it flew,” he said. Bear added a double in the fifth.
Staples went 5⅔ innings. Any chance he had at a complete game went out the window in the sixth on a 10-pitch at-bat by CBC’s Aiden Lefave. Staples finally struck him out after Lefave fouled off six pitches, but he was at 98 pitches with the maximum allowed of 105.
“My arm is still feeling pretty good,” Staples said. He allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out 11.
“I feel a lot more comfortable out there with this defense behind me. I know if the ball is hit on the ground, the defense will get it,” he said.
White came in and overwhelmed all four batters he faced with four straight strikeouts. The seniors tallied 15 strikeouts for the game. White also had a nice game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
Angevine was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Rylan Politika was 2-for-2 and Landen Olson hit a double and scored a run.
