SEQUIM — Tour de Dungeness riders faced showers mixed with pleasant sun all day in the first leg of the 2017 race Saturday.
Race organizer Mike Van Doren said numbers of riders were down slightly during the initial races because of concerns over the weather, which turned out to be not that bad. The second round of Tour de Dungeness races will be held along the same route in and around Sequim Saturday.
Cyclists from as far away as Portland, Ore., Billings, Mont., and Fresno, Calif., participated in the race.
The best finishes by local riders were posted by Tavish Taylor and his wife Emily. Port Angeles’ Tavish finished 13th in the Men’s Senior Category 1/2. Emily (listed from Wenatchee) finished second in the women’s senior category 4 race.
Another Port Angeles cyclist, Darryl Wolfe, finished 33rd in the Men’s Senior Category 4.
Van Doren said the race did have a major crash. Logan Owen, a top U-23 rider from Bremerton, was injured in a crash and had to be taken to the hospital. Van Doren said it appeared he wasn’t seriously injured. His wife, Chloe Dygart-Owen, was also in the race and pulled out after he was injured.
