PORT TOWNSEND — With a banged-up Nate Despain sitting on the bench, the Sequim boys swept their two Crush in the Slush games, dominating Port Townsend in the second half in a 63-36 win.
This game was close until late in the second quarter. Sequim went on a little run to take a 36-27 lead into the halftime break, then the Wolves outscored the Redhawks 27-9 in the second half.
The Wolves are back on a two-game winning streak after losing three straight coming in to the tournament.
“It was good to get a couple of wins,” said Sequim coach Greg Glasser. He said it was good for a lot of players to get in the game — nine different Wolves scored — and learn to play without Despain controlling the ball. He gave credit to Riley Cowan, who only scored two after his 27-point outburst against Ferndale, for controlling the game for the Wolves.
“Ferndale wasn’t pretty, but we figured out a way to win. [Port Townsend] was fun with other guys contributing in big ways. The team really came together as a group in this tournament,” Glasser said.
Despain, the leading scorer for the Wolves, sat with a quad injury. He also had a swollen elbow on his shooting arm after Sequim’s win over Ferndale on Friday.
Hayden Eaton led Sequim with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Blake Wiker, who doesn’t get a lot of minutes normally, hit four 3-pointers (including three in the Wolves’ 23-point second quarter) to finishwith 14 points.
“[Wicker’s] three 3-pointers did a lot of damage,” said Port Townsend coach Tom Webster.
“They’re well-coached and they outplayed us,” Webster said. Still, in all, Webster said the tournament was positive for Port Townsend, which split its two games.
“It was good for us in a lot of ways to play a team like that,” Webster said.
The Redhawks were led by Noa Montoya and Jaden Watkins with 12 points each.
Sequim (3-2, 7-4) takes a week off and then is back into Olympic League 2A Division with a road game at Port Angeles (2-1 6-3) on Jan. 8.
Port Townsend (1-1, 5-4) next has a nonleague game Friday at Kingston (0-5, 0-10).
In other scores in Saturday’s Crush in the Slush games, the Neah Bay girls beat Port Townsend 77-24, while the Neah Bay boys beat The Northwest School 48-32.
