SEQUIM — Sequim’s girls cross country team turned in a second-place performance on its “home turf,” the Voice of America course at Dungeness Recreation Area in Olympic League Meet No. 2 on Wednesday.
Wolves’ runners totaled 99 team points on the 3.1-mile course to edge North Kitsap (100) and Port Angeles (101), with Bainbridge easily winning the meet with 20 points.
Dawn Hulstedt posted Sequim’s top finish as the senior was fifth overall with a time of 21 minutes, 38.43 seconds.
Wolves freshman Marea Denton placed 15th in 23:48.88, Birdie Pyeatt came in 23rd in 24:08, Manuela Valle Jover came in 27th (25:16.77) and Aspen Goldner ended up 41st (27:05.32).
Port Angeles junior Leia Larson ended up third individually for the Riders with a time of 21:34.68.
Sophomore teammate Miriam Cobb ended up 11th for the Riders in 23:19.89, while Faerin Tait came in 18th in 23:55.54 and freshman Quinn Herr placed 33rd (26:19.27).
“Faerin Tait performed well and beat her time from last season on the same course,” Riders coach Angie Gooding said.
Bainbridge’s Sabine Hartenstine won her second straight race in 20:30.87.
In the boys race, Andre Campbell led Port Angeles athletes, placing 22nd in 18:55.18.
Easton Dempsey was next for the Riders in 19:24.74 to come in 30th, Justin Garrett was 35th (20:06.39) while Lukas Teague (20:29.43) and Justin McClarty (20:36.3) were 37th and 38th.
“What a terrific, sunny cross country meet we had in Sequim at the gorgeous Voice of America course,” Port Angeles coach Angie Gooding said. “The boys worked fantastically as a team, led by Andre Campbell and Easton Dempsey who led the Roughrider boys’ pack.
“These two young men are true leaders and because we have a young team they make it a priority to pace with younger runners.”
Sequim’s Adrian Osborne led the Wolves’ boys, coming in 19th in 18:51.37. Freshman Westley French clocked a time of 20:11.2 to end up 36th, while Johnathan Tipton placed 41st Jackson Hines was 47th and Meikel Hagedorn 48th.
Bainbridge junior Ben Crandall won the race, setting the course record in 16:29.5.
The Spartans won the team portion with 35 points. Port Angeles was sixth with 152 points and Sequim placed seventh with 183.
