TACOMA — The Port Angeles and East Jefferson boys and Sequim’s Riley Pyeatt were all champions Saturday at the 2021 Westside Classic West-Central District III cross-country championships and all will be moving on to the state 2A meet in Pasco in November.
Pyeatt won the girls 2A individual championship at Chambers Creek in style, beating second place by more than a minute. Pyeatt took first place in 19 minutes, 6.2 seconds, 67 seconds ahead of second place runner Salix Wartes-Kahl of North Kitsap Her teammate Kaitlyn Bloomenrader also finished in the top 10, finishing eighth with a time of 20:56.5.
Pyeatt and Bloomenrader will both be going to state.
The Port Angeles boys dominated the 2A race with a score of 53, well ahead of second-place Kingston’s 111 (Cross-country is like golf, with lower scores better).
The Riders had four boys in the top 12 and five in the top 22. They were led by Jack Gladfelter, who finished third with a time of 16:16.9. Maxwell Baeder finished eighth (16:53.3), Joshua Gavin 10th (17:21.4), Naaman McGuffey 12th (17:32.3) and Langdon Larson 22nd (18:06.9). All five qualified for state both as a team and individually. There were 124 runners in this race.
Sequim’s Colby Ellefson also had a solid race, finishing seventh with a time of 16:52.3. He will be going to state. Sequim as a team finished 11th with 282 points.
The Sequim girls finished sixth as a team with 161 points, just missing out being able to go to state as a full team. Port Angeles finished 12th as a team with 316. Port Angeles’ top runner in the girls’ race was Zakara Braun, who finished 44th (23:32.9).
East Jefferson boys
In the boys 1A race, East Jefferson had a fantastic showing, getting four runners in the top eight.
The Rivals’ Max Allworth-Miles finished second with a time of 16:52.2. Sebastian Manza was third (17:05.2), Glen Dawson fourth (17:44.3) and Soare Johnston eighth (17:50.3). The winner of the race was Klahowya’s Kelton Gagnon (16:15.7). All four qualified for state as a team and individually.
The Rivals easily won the team title with 45 points to Bellevue Christian’s 62.
East Jefferson girls
LANGLEY — The East Jefferson girls ran at a different race, the Northwest District 1-4 championships at South Whidbey High School, finishing fifth as a team with 163 points.
The Rivals’ top runner was Aliyah Yearian, who will be going to state as an individual by finishing fourth with a time of 19:54.07. Camryn Hines is likely going to state, finishing 22nd (21:10.26). Lia Poore was 46th (22:06.53), Tadu Dollarhide 50th (22:17.93), Sylvia Butterfield 68th, (23:08.18), and Fiona Fraser 97th (24:10.10). This was a big race with 164 runners.
Forks
RAINIER — Forks didn’t have full boys’ and girls’ team, but had several runners compete in the 1B/2B District 4 championships in Rainier.
The Spartans’ best showing was by freshman Moli Luong in the girls’ race, coming in 29th with a time of 25:31.86. Her teammate Kendall Marshall finished 36th with a time of 26:40.50 and Hailey Garcia-Moog finished 54th (37:15.56).
For the boys, the best showing was by the Spartans’ Kevin Camacho-Rolden, who finished 39th with a time of 19:52.48. His teammate Nick Kelly was 91st (30:06.92).
