SEQUIM — Port Angeles sophomore Gracie Long edged Sequim’s Waverly Shreffler by less than a second to claim her second straight girls cross country title at the Olympic League Championships at Cedars at Dungeness golf course.
Brendon Despain won the boys title to lead Sequim to its third consecutive league championship.
Long finished with a time of 18 minutes, 53.93 seconds in Thursday’s 5-kilometer girls race, a half-second ahead of Shreffler (18:44.44).
But Shreffler and the Wolves ended up with 49 points to earn the team championship over the second-place Roughriders (78 points).
Sequim and Port Angeles each had three runners place in the top 10, but the Wolves ended up with seven of the top 25 finishers, while the Riders managed four in the top 25.
Sequim’s Kiara Pierson came in seventh (20:47), and Audrey Shingleton’s time of 20:59 was good for ninth.
Elizabeth Rosales placed 13th, Alexis Cromer was 18th and Emily Webb and Noelle Bittner finished 24th and 25th, respectively, for the Wolves.
Port Angeles’ Madelyn Dougherty earned third place after completing the course with a time of 20:27.
Lael Butler (21:19) came in 10th for the Riders, and Lily Morlan was 20th.
Port Townsend, the lone Class 1A team, finished sixth in the eight-team competition.
The Redhawks were led by the 14th-place finish of Aliyah Parson (22:08).
Ally Bradley and Meigan Kunz placed 27th and 28th, respectively, for Port Townsend.
Sequim, Port Angeles and Port Townsend next compete at the Westside Classic at American Lake Veterans Golf Course in Tacoma this Saturday.
Long’s and Shreffler’s times at the league meet rank first and second in the district.
Sequim boys earn title
Despain won the boys individual title with a time of 15:52.97, topping teammate Jackson Oliver, who finished in 16:06.32.
Despain’s time put him a No. 1 in the district heading into this Saturday’s Westside Classic.
The Wolves cruised to a team title by claiming five spots in the top 10 and six in the top 11.
Ash Francis ended up fourth (16:15.49), C.J. Daniels was seventh (16:50.42) and Chris Jeffko came in eighth with a time of 16:51.68.
Wendall Lorenzen was 11th for Sequim.
Cameron Butler was the top Port Angeles runner, ending up 17th (17:27.64). Hunter Dempsey placed 21st after finishing in 17:39.34.
As a team, the Riders finished seventh.
Port Townsend finished ninth. Jake Vande Griend had the best time for the Redhawks, finishing 29th in 17:59.77.
Henry Veitenhans was 32nd for Port Townsend.
