CROSS COUNTRY: Port Angeles girls win Olympic League title

Gracie Long wins girls individual crown

SEQUIM — Led by race winner Gracie Long and three teammates who finished in the top six, the Port Angeles girls won the Olympic League 2A Division Cross Country Championship at the Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course.

Meanwhile, the Sequim boys, with four top 10 finishes, won the boys 2A championship. The Port Townsend boys won the Olympic 1A title and the Sequim girls finished second in the 2A division.

The Sequim boys finished the race with 35 points to Kingston’s 45. Port Angeles finished third with 74 points, North Kitsap, fourth, 86; Olympic, fifth, 130; North Mason, sixth, 162; Bremerton, seventh, 162.

Among the girls’ teams, Port Angeles led with 34 points while Sequim had 40. North Kitsap was third with 88, Kingston, fourth, 91; Olympic, fifth, 101, North Mason, sixth, 154.

Third-straight win

Long won the League 5k race Thursday with a time of 19 minutes, 37 seconds, beating Sequim’s Morgan Bingham by nine seconds. Bingham’s teammate Kiara Pierson finished third with a time of 20:14.

It is her third straight league title.

A trio of Roughrider runners finished fourth through sixth. Madelyn Doughtery came in fourth with a time of 21:00, Ella Holland, fifth, 21:08; and Lael Butler, sixth, at 21:10. Sequim’s Kaitlyn Viada finished 10th with a time of 22:41.

For the boys, Sequim’s Ash Francis finished second with a time of 16:31, 18 seconds behind race winner Andrew Simon of Kingston.

The Wolves’ Murray Bingham finished third at 16:41, Alec Shingleton, seventh, 17:21 and Jazen Bartee 10th at 17:48.

Port Angeles’ top runner, Cameron Butler, finished sixth with a time of 17:19.

For the 1A teams, Port Townsend finished with 27 points to Klahowya’s 29. The Klahowya girls beat Port Townsend with 20 points to the Redhawks’ 37.

Port Townsend’s Brennan LaBrie won the boys’ 1A race (and was ninth among all the runners) with a time of 17:35, while his teammate Gabe Patrick finished second at 18:11. Anika Avelino was Port Townsend’s top girl runner, finishing second with a time of 21:06, 22 seconds behind winner Holly Rouse of Klahowya.

Port Angeles and Sequim now move on to the 2A Westside Classic West Central District meet in Lakewood on Oct. 29. Port Townsend moves on to the 1A race at the same venue and the same day.
