CROSS COUNTRY: Long, Butler lead Port Angeles at Bellevue Invite

ISSAQUAH — Port Angeles’ cross country teams had impressive showings at the Bellevue Invitational at Lake Sammamish State Park, despite being the only Class 2A school competing against the higher classifications.

The races were set up in flights, with each team’s top two runners in one race, the threes and fours in another, and so on. Each race had about 62 runners.

For the Port Angeles girls team, Gracie Long came in 11th place in the 1/2 flight with a time of 19 minutes, 44 seconds on the 5-kilometer course.

Willow Suess came in 26th in 21:46 and Lael Butler was 33rd with a time of 22:16 in the 3/4 flight.

Annika Pederson finished 13th in 21:30 and Kendal Jacobson took 41st at 25:01 in the 5/6 flight.

Astrid Schick came in 32nd in 24:58 and Zaundria Patterson 34th in 25:17 in the 7/8 flight.

Freshman Madelyn Dougherty took ninth place in the JV girls race with a 22:03 time.

On the boys side, Peter Butler took a fifth place for the Roughriders with a time of 16:57 and Simon Shindler earned sixth place with a 16:59 in the 3/4 flight.

Tristan Butler was 26th at 18:18 and Alek Long took 42nd with a time of 19:50 in flight 5/6.

Hunter Dempsey came in 37th at 20:07 and Forrest Clark was 40th at 20:45 in flight 7/8.

Sophomore Isaac Newlin ran a strong 22:31 in the boys JV race.

The Port Angeles cross country team next travels to the Kitsap Fairgrounds on Wednesday to take on Olympic and North Mason in an Olympic League meet.
