LAKEWOOD — Port Angeles’ Lauren Larson set a school record in the 5,000-meter cross-country, coming in second out of 275 runners at the Nike Hole in the Wall XC Invitational.

Larson’s time of 18 minutes, 44.3 seconds broke a record set last year by Gracie Long. Larson was beaten only by a runner from El Segundo High School in Southern California.

Kynzie DeLeon also had a solid race, coming in fourth with a time of 18:57.3. That was the third-fastest time in Port Angeles High School history.

Out of 40 teams at Saturday’s event, the Roughriders came in seventh, beating a number of 3A and 4A schools. The Riders had a total of seven runners — Larson, DeLeon, Kathryn Guttormsen, Ella Holland, Kaylee Helgeson, Emma Weaver and Jenna McGoff — come in the top 150 runners in the race.

For the boys, Thomas Shaw had the best time at 17:00.1, finishing 39th out of 371 runners.

Gabriel Long had a solid race, coming in 73rd with a time of 17:24.9. The Port Angeles boys had five runners — Shaw, Long, Cameron Butler, Adam Borde and Joshua Gavin — in the top 154 competitors and finished 15th out of 53 teams at the race.

The Port Angeles cross-country team will next run at a meet with North Kitsap and Olympic at Olympic on Wednesday.
