CAMPBELLSVILLE, Kent. — Nick Johnston, a 2014 Sequim High School graduate, is excelling in his senior season as a pitcher with the Campbellsville University Tigers.
Johnston has appeared in seven games in a long relief role on the season, posting a 3-0 record with a 2.79 earned-run average in 19.1 innings pitched.
He’s had three, three-strikeout games thus far for the Tigers (27-12).
Johnston pitched two seasons at Edmonds Community College after winning the All-Peninsula Baseball MVP his senior year for Sequim.
He posted a 2.43 ERA and the Fitness and Wellness major earned Academic All-Mid-South Conference honors last year for Campbellsville.
Paynter, Grubb at LCC
LONGVIEW — Former Port Angeles and Sequim High School baseball players Travis Paynter and James Grubb are part of the bullpen at Lower Columbia College.
The Wilder Baseball teammates are playing for former Port Angeles and Wilder star Eric Lane, who is in his first season as manager of the Red Devils.
A sophomore, Paynter has pitched in four games so far for Lower Columbia, posting a 1.22 earned-run average, striking out five and walking none in 7.1 innings.
Paynter is a 2016 Port Angeles High School graduate and former All-Peninsula Baseball MVP, who also pitched for the Port Angeles Lefties during their inaugural season.
Grubb, a freshman, has pitched in two games for the Red Devils (13-5), allowing one run on one hit in two innings pitched.
He is a 2016 graduate of Sequim High School.
Brennon Kaleiwahea
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — Brennon “Benny” Kaleiwahea, a member of the inaugural 2017 Port Angeles Lefties, is making the most of his senior campaign at Tennessee Tech.
Kaleiwahea has started every game for the Golden Eagles and leads the team in batting average (.417), with a .621 slugging percentage and a .487 on-base percentage while hitting four home runs and driving in 25 runs.
In a recent 26-11 drubbing of Eastern Illinois, he was 3 for 6 with six RBIs including a 3-run homer and a 2-run double. He was 3-4 with a double and three runs scored in a 12-6 win over Austin Peay, and was 4-6 with seven RBIs and three runs scored in a 27-7 pounding of Lipscomb.
Kaleiwahea leads the Ohio Valley Conference in batting average.
