PORT ANGELES — The pipeline of North Olympic Peninsula sports stars going on to Peninsula College continued this week with Sequim’s Hannah Wagner signing to play soccer for the Pirates.
Wagner, a three-sport star for the Wolves, said that in growing up on the Peninsula, she saw what “amazing program” the Pirates have. The Peninsula women’s soccer team has won the Northwest Athletic Conference championship in 2012, 2013, 2016, 2018 and 2021.
Last season’s NWAC championship team had Chimacum’s Grace Johnson and Port Angeles’ Millie Long on the roster. Long, her Port Angeles teammate Madison Cooke and Wagner’s basketball teammate Hope Glasser were on the women’s basketball team last year that went to the NWAC championship game.
Wagner said she isn’t intimidated by going to such a powerhouse women’s soccer program.
“I’m looking forward to joining such a strong team. I think I’ll fit in well,” she said. She said she likes that coach Kanyon Anderson “just wants everyone to be better and to be successful.”
Johnson is moving on to play at Cal Poly-Humboldt, a four-year school in Northern California. Wagner and Long will get a chance to play together next year.
Wagner often got tasked with defending Long while the two were rivals in high school soccer, but Wagner said they’ve been teammates before on Storm King teams.
Wagner will also likely see some of her old Sequim teammates in Peninsula College games. Abby Schroeder and Olivia Hare play for Lower Columbia College while Gabby Happe plays for Edmonds.
Wagner was all league in three sports for the Wolves — soccer, basketball and golf. She actually has one week left to her high school career as she is playing in the 2A girls state golf tournament next week. She plans to study health science at Peninsula and go into either nursing or biology.
