BELLINGHAM — Millie Long notched her first collegiate goal to spark the Peninsula College women in a 3-0 North Region win over Whatcom on Saturday.
Long, who shattered the Port Angeles High School career scoring record with 86 goals, scored off a Miya Clark assist in the 14th minute.
Chimacum alum Grace Johnson added an unassisted goal in the 66th minute, and Mya Raunig scored an insurance goal off a Cerese McMillan assist just before the close of the contest for the final tally.
Pirates’ goalkeeper Musuai Isaia saved six shots to earn her second shutout and Peninsula’s fourth in five games this season.
The Pirates (3-0-0, 4-0-1) host Edmonds at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the team’s home opener.
Pirates win shootout
PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College men led by a 4-0 score early in the second half, and while challenged, never relinquished the lead in a 5-3 win over Bellevue at Wally Sigmar Field on Saturday.
Fernando Tavares opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 13th minute, and defender Dylan Pauw went forward and scored the second Pirate goal at the 30-minute mark on an assist by Tim Deser.
Theodore Baiye added an unassisted goal just after halftime and assisted on Nicolas Hernandez’s goal for a 4-0 advantage in the 49th minute.
Hernandez added the fifth and final Peninsula goal on another Baiye assist to put the game out of reach in the 68th minute.
The first-place Pirates (3-0-0, 6-0-0) host South Puget Sound at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Rivals double digits
CHIMACUM —The East Jefferson girls soccer team poured in the goals in a 10-0 win over Coupeville on Saturday.
Scoring first-half goals were Clare Johnson, Ava Shiflett, who scored twice within two minutes, and Kaylen Pray.
Freshman Kay Botkin notched a second-half hat trick, and Rivals coach Rob Cantley moved regular goalkeeper Savanna Hoffman to the field, where she scored two second-half goals.
Izzy McCracken added the 10th score for East Jefferson.
“We pretty much stuck to the game plan of working on our passing game,” Cantley said.
“I don’t recall either Port Townsend or Chimacum ever putting 10 goals on the board. And it was kind of catharctic for the girls to get a similar loss to Klahowya out of their system by getting a big offensive showing.”
