PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s soccer team got two assists and two goals from Miya Clarke and erupted for six goals in the second half in a 7-1 win over Edmonds on Monday.
The men, meanwhile, got three quick goals in succession in the first half to beat Edmonds 3-0.
The women’s game was the Pirates’ highest-scoring game of the season, and it came with Peninsula and Edmonds tied at 1-1 at the half.
“The first half was not so good,” said coach Kanyon Anderson. “The second half was wonderful.”
“We’re peaking right at the end of the season. Our best three games have been the last three games,” Anderson said.
Peninsula, which improved to 8-0, got its first goal from Makenna Wilson in the fifth minute, assisted by Clarke.
Clarke scored two unassisted goals in the second half, then Wilson scored again with an assist to Clarke.
Port Angeles High School graduate Krysten McGuffey scored with an assist to Caneel Corpuz. Addy Becker and Hana Scott added unassisted goals.
Anderson said the women are remaining motivated despite not having an NWAC championship as a goal.
“We’ve known that a postseason wasn’t going to be in the cards. Almost everyone is coming back next fall. They’re thinking championship next season,” Anderson said.
Sequim High School grad Gabby Happe played 60 minutes for Edmonds, while Port Angeles’ Lucah Folden got in the game for 10 minutes for the Tritons.
Men’s game
The men got three pretty goals in nine minutes in the first half and then held on to beat the Tritons.
“In the first half, we had a couple of nice goals,” said coach Jake Hughes. “We showed our quality. Had good rotations at midfield.”
Jeong Hyun Kang scored the first goal unassisted from well out, going high on a shot from 30-35 yards in the 25th minute.
Just two minutes later, Theodore Baiye took a high-arcing shot that looped over the goalkeeper’s outstretched arm to get in for a goal. His score was assisted by Kyota Hiate.
Christopher Dominguez may have had the best goal of all in the 34th minute. After a throw-in, Kang hit a high pass to Dominguez in the box and Dominguez was able to head it in perfectly for the Pirates’ third score.
Hughes said the Pirates were able to rotate in a number of players in the second half.
The Pirates men (6-1) next play Thursday at Whatcom (5-1-1) in a game for first place in the North Division. The Pirates and Orcas have split a pair of games so far this year.
The women (8-0) next play at home at 2 p.m. Monday against Everett.
