SHORELINE — The Peninsula women easily defended their North Division title with an 8-0 division-opening win over Shoreline.
Meanwhile, the men, also defending North Division champs, tied the Dolphins 1-1 in their opener.
Believe it or not, the women actually went through a period of 52 minutes in Saturdays game in which they didn’t score.
Six different women scored for the Pirates. They got off to a fast start in goals by Jordyn DiCintio in the seventh minute and Madeleine Parton in the ninth minute to take a 2-0 lead.
The score remained tied at halftime and the women didn’t score again until the 62nd minute when they erupted in a flurry of six goals in 16 minutes.
The women got a pair of goals from Parton and Taylor Graham, while DiCintio, Emelie Small and Tatiana Hagan all scored goals. Brianna Duran scored a goal and had an assist, while Sarah Reiber and Kelly Kevershan each had assists.
The Peninsula women ended with 30 shots to one shot by the Dolphins.
The Pirates (4-0-0, 1-0-0) have outscored their past two opponents by a combined score of 17-0 and are leading the entire Northwest Conference with 24 goals in four games. It was goaltender Akari Hoshino’s second straight shutout.
The Pirates next play at home against Everett at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Men’s Soccer
Peninsula 1, Shoreline 1
SHORELINE — The Peninsula men dominated in the statistics, but had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Shoreline Saturday.
The Pirates had 17 shots to Shoreline’s seven (and five corner kicks to Shoreline’s one) and forced Shoreline’s goalie Genero Ruiz to make 14 saves. By comparison, Peninsula’s goalie Darius Ochoa only had to make two saves.
The Pirates got a goal from Cesar Gervacio, assisted by Manuel Galiano, just before the end of the first half to take a lead. It was Gervacio’s fourth goal of the year.
The Pirates gave up a goal to Shoreline in the 62nd minute, then the two teams battled to a tie.
The game was physical with five yellow cards handed out, three the Pirates and two to the Dolphins.
The Pirates (2-1-1, 0-0-1) next play at home against Everett at 4 p.m.
