COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula women win behind pair of Millie Long goals

Men drop first game of the year

EVERETT — The Peninsula College women’s soccer team got a pair of goals from Millie Long and a shutout performance from its defense in a 4-0 win Saturday over a previously unbeaten Everett squad.

Meanwhile, the Pirates men’s team lost its first game of the year 4-2 against Everett. It was the North Region opener for both the men’s and women’s teams.

Long scored in the seventh minute and the 32nd minute as the Pirates took a 3-0 lead into the half. Taya Bohenko had a goal and an assist, while Briana-Jean Tanaka assisted on one of Long’s goals. Allysun Gerke also had a goal.

Everett got off only seven shots all game and just one shot on goal. Goalkeeper Frida Markstrom earned the shutout. Long has four goals already in just three games.

Men’s game

The Peninsula College men fell behind 3-0 after Everett scored two goals in 3½ minutes early in the second half. The Pirates rallied to make it close as Dylan Pauw scored in the 60th minute, with an assist to Shu Kato and Inchun Hun scored in the 68th minute with an assist to Fernando Tavares.

But Everett quickly regained the momentum in the 71st minute, getting an insurance goal to make it 4-2.

The Pirates outshot Everett 17-12, forcing Trojans’ keeper Avary Olson to make 10 saves.

The Peninsula women (1-0 North Region, 2-0-1 overall) will next play a nonleague game Tuesday at North Idaho in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The men (1-1, 4-1) play a nonleague match at South Puget Sound in Olympia on Wednesday.
