PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s soccer team got a long-range goal from defender Tommylia Dunbar in the first half and held on for a 1-0 shutout over Skagit Valley on Sunday.
Dunbar scored her goal in the 35th minute. She brought the ball up from the defensive end up the left wing on a solo run and shot a sharp-angled shot from 32 yards out that floated perfectly over the goalkeeper’s outstretched hands and into the right corner for an unassisted goal.
“It was an amazing goal,” said head coach Kanyon Anderson. “That goal was a top 10 I’ve ever seen for sure.”
That was the only scoring for the game. Pirates keeper Musuai Isaia saved six shots on goal to earn the shutout.
“Skagit as usual is organized defensively. They’re a difficult team to break down,” Anderson said. Peninsula is the only team that has managed to score on the Cardinals, who have shut out both Whatcom and Edmonds.
Peninsula did dominate on the offensive end with 16 shots, nine corner kicks and five shots on goal. The Cardinals only managed seven total shots.
Anderson said Isaia played a good game to preserve the shutout, fighting off an injury to stay in the game.
“She got her ankle stepped on in the first half. She had to deal with some adversity,” Anderson said.
The win keeps the Pirates’ record perfect at 3-0-0 on top of the North Region. Peninsula next plays Thursday at Edmonds (0-3-1). Edmonds features Lucah Folden, a former Port Angeles Roughrider and Gabby Happe, a former Sequim Wolf.
Peninsula meanwhile, features former Roughrider Kyrsten McGuffey and former Chimacum player Grace Johnson.
