PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s soccer team improved to 8-1-0 by recording their conference-leading eighth shutout with a 2-0 win over Edmonds in a rematch of the 2013 Northwest Athletic Conference championship.
The Pirates, ranked third in the NWAC Coaches poll and eighth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America junior college poll, also remained unbeaten in their four-year history of matches at Sigmar Field on Peninsula College’s Port Angeles campus.
Edmonds threatened early, nearly scoring on a breakaway that was blocked by Peninsula goalkeeper Emily Flinn.
Then Peninsula also had a near-goal experience when Alyssa Bertuleit crossed the ball to the far post where Larkyn Nelson blasted what looked like a sure goal, but Edmonds keeper Alecia Longsine made an impressive run across the front of the goal and arrived just in time to prevent the score.
Peninsula finally got through when Mary Pierce scored off a rebound assist from Paxton Rodocker for a 1-0 lead just 17 minutes into the match.
That score stood through halftime of Tuesday’s physical match.
The Pirates added insurance when Nelson scored in the 60th minute off an assist from Bertuleit, redeeming their previous effort.
Flinn recorded the shutout, her second in as many tries this season, with two saves. Longsine finished with four saves for the Tritons.
