COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula women, men sweep Whatcom

BELLINGHAM — The Peninsula College women’s soccer team continued with its explosive goalscoring in a 10-1 win over Whatcom on Saturday, while the men got back on the winning track with a much more competitive 3-0 victory over the Orcas.

The women have scored 42 goals in their past six matches and 21 over their past two. The Pirates’ 44 goals this season leads the Northwest Athletic Conference by a huge margin. Second is Pierce with 27.

Seven pirates scored goals. Shawna Larson led the way with a hat trick, while Maylin Rivera scored two goals.

Taya Bohenko had a goal and two assists. Desiree Dutra and Bianca-Jean Tanaka each scored a goal and picked up an assist, while Keilee Silva and Caneel Corpuz scored goals.

Sequim’s Hannah Wagner and Port Angeles’ Anna Petty each had assists, as did Jaeda Mae Edayan. Talia Marini collected the victory in goal.

Larson is now leading the NWAC in goals with seven, while Tanaka is second with six and Petty third with five.

Peninsula (7-0-0, 2-0-0 North Region) next plays at Shoreline (0-2) on Saturday.

Men’s game

The Peninsula men got off to a fast start with a goal from Rei Sato in the sixth minute. Manny Garcia scored in the 30th minute to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead into the half and Matthew Enrique got an insurance goal in the 58th minute.

Sato and Garcia also picked up assists as did Abdurahim Leigh and Nate Travis.

The Pirates’ defense allowed only one shot on goal. Noah Plummer in goal earned the shutout.

The North Region win was a solid bounceback from a one-goal loss against a tough Everett team last week.

Peninsula (4-2, 1-1 North Region) next plays at Shoreline (0-1-1) on Saturday.
