COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula women keep pace with Skagit Valley

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College dispatched Edmonds with ease in a 7-0 Sophomore Night drubbing Wednesday at Wally Sigmar Field.

The win kept the Pirates (8-0-2, 13-0-2) two points back of Skagit Valley (9-0-1, 10-0-2) for first place in the NWAC North Region.

Both teams have clinched NWAC tournament berths and — barring stumbles in Saturday matches against Bellevue (Peninsula) and Everett (Skagit Valley) — are on a course to decide the North championship at Skagit Valley in each team’s regular-season finale Wednesday.

The two teams tied 0-0 at Peninsula on Sept. 27.

Sophomores owned the stage Wednesday against Edmonds, scoring five of the team’s seven goals.

Emily Eckert put Peninsula up 1-0 in the 20th minute with Caneel Corpuz making the first of two saves in the match.

Sophomores Alexia Rodriguez-Burdeaux and Lauren La Fountain then notched unassisted scores in the 28th and 43rd for a 3-0 Pirates lead at halftime.

It was an all-Hilo, Hawaii, connection in the 53rd as Corpuz found fellow Hilo resident Keilee Silva for a goal and a 4-0 lead.

Freshman Shawna Larson scored twice in a row in the 59th (assisted by sophomore Sydney Soskis) and 67th (Brooke Reiber).

Sophomore Elliana Barden finished out the scoring in the 73rd, assisted by Jaeda Mae Edayan.

Kylie Janke and Talia Marini combined in goal on the shutout with Marini making the Pirates’ lone save.
