PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women remained unbeaten Monday, winning their second-straight game over a four-year school via shutout, 2-0 over the University of Mary at Wally Sigmar Field.
Peninsula also beat the University of Northern British Columbia 4-0 on Sunday to go to 4-0 on the season.
“What an awesome preseason,” coach Kanyon Anderson told his squad after Monday’s match. The defending NWAC champion women also swept two games at the NWAC Friendlies last week in Tukwila.
“We had to fight really hard against a really good team,” Anderson said of the University of Mary, which is out of Bismarck, N.D. He said Mary came out aggressive and determined to set a tone.
“We had to respond to that and we did. They took it to us and we responded,” he said.
Scoring goals for the Pirates were Grace Hipke (assisted by Toni Powsey) and Miya Clarke (assisted by Kayla Alcott).
Counting a trio of scrimmages in Canada, this was the Pirates’ seventh match in nine days. They get a break for nearly two weeks, when they begin NWAC North Division play with a match against Shoreline on Sept. 7.
One pleasant surprise for the Pirates so far has been the play of Chimacum’s Grace Johnson, who already has two goals and six points for Peninsula in her first four college games.
“Her soccer IQ is really high. She’s playing much older than she is,” said Anderson.
“It’s an honor to be able to represent a small school” on Peninsula’s team, Johnson said. She said the biggest change she noticed about college soccer compared to small high school soccer is the speed of the game.
“It was tough getting used to the speed of play my first week, after that, I settled down,” she said.
Johnson said she didn’t even realize that Peninsula had a women’s soccer team until the sophomore year of high school and was excited that there was a school nearby that she could move on to.
“I want to hopefully inspire the next generation of girls out of Chimacum,” she said.
Sunday’s Game Peninsula 4, UNBC 0
In Sunday’s game, the Peninsula women only took a minute to score, going on to beat the University of Northern British Columbia 4-0.
Johnson scored her second goal in three games in the first minute. She already has six points for the Pirates after just three games.
Kayla Alcott scored her second goal of the season in the 12th minute. Both Johnson and Alcott’s goals were unassisted.
Shyanne Change scored a goal in the 33rd minute, assisted by Sam Oliveira, as the Pirates took a 3-0 lead into the half.
Madison Stevens scored in the 47th minute, with her goal assisted by Alcott, to complete the scoring.
Husuai Siania-Isaia and Chloe Keenan-Merlo combined for the shutout in goal. They faced a total of three shots.
