PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s soccer team clinched their sixth straight Northwest Athletic Conference division championship Monday, while the men also rolled in a pair of matches against Shoreline that were originally scheduled for Saturday.
The women (11-0, 12-1-1), ranked 15th in the nation and No. 1 in the NWAC, rolled over the Dolphins 6-1 to improve to 33 points in North Division play, 13 points ahead of second-place Whatcom. The win guarantees the Pirates a home quarterfinal playoff match at noon Saturday, Nov. 5.
Meanwhile, the top-ranked NWAC men’s team, ranked No. 12 in the country, shut out Shoreline 6-0 Monday to maintain a five-point lead over Whatcom in the race for the North Division men’s title. Peninsula is atop the North at 10-0-1, good for 31 points, leading 8-1-2 Whatcom with 26 points. The Pirates have clinched a playoff berth, but still have work to do to win their eighth-straight division title.
The Pirates kick off a three-game road swing at Everett today, followed by matches at Skagit Valley on Saturday and Whatcom Wednesday, Oct. 26, before returning home Oct. 29 against Edmonds.
Despite crushing the Dolphins and clinching the division championship, the Pirate women did relinquish a goal on Monday – the first goal surrendered in 11 league matches this year. The PC women have given up just five goals in 14 matches this season, the fewest in the NWAC.
Hoku Afong, who leads Peninsula with nine goals, scored twice in the first 29 minutes, while sophomore defender Bailie Zuber also scored a pair of goals, the first of her collegiate career. Sydney Warren and Emilee Greve added goals of their own.
Coby Yoshimura, who is among the NWAC leaders in assists with seven, picked up two on Monday. Maddy Parton, Greve and Audrey Barham also picked up assists.
Men
Peninsula 6, Shoreline 0
The Pirates (10-0-1, 12-0-2), who had to rally from behind to beat the Dolphins back on Sept. 10 to win 4-3, have since got Shoreline’s number with a 5-0 win on Sept. 28 and then a 6-0 victory Monday.
Kevin Medina led the Pirates with a pair of goals, Juan Carrillo joined teammate Cesar Gervacio in the top five list of NWAC scorers with his ninth goal of the season, Jared Ortiz had a goal, and Demar Stewart returned from an injury with a goal.
The sixth goal of the match was an own goal by Shoreline.
Miguel Valderrama, Adrian Benitez, Carrillo and Ortiz all contributed assists.
