COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula Pirates sweep Tacoma

TACOMA — The Peninsula College men’s and women’s soccer teams swept Tacoma Community College in NWAACC play.

The Pirate women won 8-1, while the men earned a tough 4-1 victory.

Bri Afoa scored a hat trick for the Peninsula women’s team on Wednesday.

Defender Shelbi Vienna-Hallam continued her early season assault on opponents’ goals with two more scores. The sophomore leads the Pirates with seven goals on the season.

Freshman Larkyn Nelson scored her first college goal, and Mary Pierce found the net, too.

Bronte Fitzsimmons dished out three assists, and now leads the NWAACC with nine.

“We had our best team effort of the season,” Peninsula coach Kanyon Anderson said.

“Our toughness and pace made a big difference.

“All 20 players who got in the game contributed well.”

The Pirates (5-0, 6-2) play Saturday at Chemeketa (1-4, 1-6) in Salem, Ore., on Saturday.
