PORT ANGELES — Alex Martinez did something against Pierce College that no player had ever done in Peninsula College’s storied soccer history.
The sophomore forward scored a school single-match record five goals in the Pirates’ 9-0 rout of the Raiders at Wally Sigmar Field.
Martinez tallied his five goals in 52 minutes.
The previous record of four goals was held by Miguel Gonzalez, Seth Ransom and Jared Robinson.
With 16 goals in 10 games this season, Martinez has 37 career goals, which is 12 behind Peninsula’s all-time career leader Gonzalez, who had 49 in 2010 and 2011.
The outcome of Saturday’s match was never in question, as the NWAACC’s top-ranked Pirates narrowly missed a goal in the first 20 seconds of the match.
Martinez put Peninsula on the board 15 minutes into the game off an assist by Ash Apollon, and he struck again 17 minutes later with the help of Corbyn May.
Kalei Gallarde made it 3-0 with a goal at the 37-minute mark, assisted by Christian Martinez, and the next three belonged to Alex Martinez, assisted by Kassio Monteiro, Apollon and Victor Sanchez.
Peninsula’s other three goals came from Gallarde, Erick Urzua and Christian Martinez.
Apollon assisted Gallarde’s goal and Caio Maciel got the ball to Christian Martinez.
Apollon’s three assists ties the college’s record for assists in a match. Apollon also had three assists against Southwestern Oregon earlier this month.
He leads the NWAACC with 12 assists this season. The school’s single-season assist record is 15 by Daniel Gonzalez in 2011.
Alex Martinez leads the conference with 37 points (16 goals, five assists), and Apollon is second with 30 (nine goals, 12 assists). Clark College’s Bernardino Ayala-Jimenez is a distant third with 16 points (seven goals, two assists).
With the big lead, Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman played his bench liberally throughout the second half, as the Pirates coasted to their third conference win in as many outings.
“The guys played well and didn’t let up,” Chapman said.
“Even though we have been doing really well and scoring goals, we are now moving into the heart of our season against opponents that are going to be much tougher.
“The next four games will be a true test to us, and if we play well and come out on top, we could be in a great position in regards to our divisional standings.”
The Pirates (3-0, 9-0-1) travel to play NWAACC West Division foe Tacoma (3-0, 4-3) on Wednesday.
With the loss, Pierce falls to 0-3 in NWAACC play, and 0-5-1 overall.

PUYALLUP — The NWAACC’s top-ranked Pirates improved to 4-0 in conference play and 5-2 overall with a 4-0 road win over the Raiders on Saturday.
Peninsula wasted little time taking control of the match, as Port Angeles High School graduate Paxton Rodocker scored the first goal of her collegiate career just two minutes into the match off an assist from Bronte Fitzsimmons
Fitzsimmons is currently second in the NWAACC in assists with six.
Defender Brenda Torres tallied the second goal of the match, also the first of her collegiate career, to give the Pirates a 2-0 at halftime.
Fitzsimmons then put the match away, scoring back-to-back goals, the first unassisted and the second off an assist by Katelyn Raatz.
Pierce, in its first year having a women’s soccer program, falls to 1-3 in NWAACC play, and 2-6 overall.
The Pirates travel to Tacoma (1-2, 3-5) for a NWAACC West Division match on Wednesday.
