COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula men, women win close matches

Peninsula Daily News

EVERETT — In its closest NWAC North Division contest of the season, the Peninsula women’s soccer team broke open a halftime stalemate to edge Everett 3-1.

The Pirates (12-0-0, 15-0-0) opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Sydney Warren found Kelly Kevershan for a 1-0 lead.

The Trojans (4-6-2, 5-10-2) tied the game up in the 33rd minute for a 1-1 score at intermission.

Warren heated up for two goals, her NWAC-leading 26th and 27th of the season, in the 70th and 74th minutes to deliver Peninsula the victory.

Her first goal came on a back-heel pass from NWAC-assist leader Jordyn DiCintio (24).

Warren’s other goal was assisted by Kevershan, who is second to DiCintio in assists with 11.

It was the Pirates’ 33rd consecutive NWAC win.

The three scores pushed Peninsula past the school’s season scoring record of 114 goals set in 2014. The Pirates have now scored 116 goals this season with three regular season games and at least one NWAC playoff game remaining.

The Pirates visit Skagit Valley on Saturday.

Men’s Game Peninsula 2, Everett 1

EVERETT — Joseph Hollimon’s goal in the 82nd minute on an assist by Cesar Gervacio broke open a 1-1 game and lifted the Pirates to an NWAC North Division victory Wednesday and an NWAC playoff berth.

Peninsula (8-0-4, 10-1-4) trails first-place Whatcom (10-0-2, 13-0-3) by four points with three division games remaining for both sides, including a Pirates at Orcas contest at Peninsula on Wednesday. The Pirates essentially need to win out and have Whatcom lose or tie in one of its other remaining matches to rally back and claim the North Division title and a home playoff game.

Manuel Galiano also scored for the Pirates just before halftime in Wednesday’s win.

Darius Ochoa had three saves in goal for Peninsula.

The Pirates visit Skagit Valley on Saturday.
