EVERETT — The Peninsula College men and women’s soccer squads both got off to solid starts in the first half in winning a pair of matches on the road against Everett.
The men scored three goals in six minutes in the first half and went on to win 3-1, while the women scored four goals in the first half to blank the Trojans 5-0.
The men’s victory vaulted the Pirates past the Trojans for undisputed second place in the North Division and avenged a loss earlier this season against Everett. Peninsula (5-1-1, 16 points) is just one point behind league leader Whatcom (5-0-2, 17 points).
Whatcom and Peninsula played once this season so far and tied.
In Saturday’s match, the Pirates found themselves behind 1-0 after the Trojans scored int he 16th minute. They quickly changed the tone of the game with three rapid goals in the 33rd, 36th and 40th minutes. Manuel Galiano, Hide Inoue and Mason Haubrich scored the tallies, all of them unassisted.
That Trojans goal snapped a scoreless streak of more than 390 minutes. The last team to score a goal against the Pirates? Everett, on Sept. 12. The Pirates have given up just six goals in 10 matches this season.
Peninsula (5-1-1, 6-3-1) will next play Skagit Valley (2-5-0, 5-5-0) at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Sigmar Field, beginning a stretch of five straight matches at home.
Women’s Soccer
Peninsula 5, Everett 0
The Pirates got their seventh shutout of the season and built up a 4-0 lead after 30 minutes to maintain a hold of first place in the North Division.
Kayla Alcott had a goal and an assist, while Taylor Graham scored unassisted and Samantha Oliveira scored unassisted in the first half. Emilee Greve added an unassisted goal in the second half.
Andrea Kenagy earned the shutout in goal, making three saves. The Pirates outshot the Trojans 18-3. The Pirates have only given up two goals so far in seven league matches, outscoring their opponents 42-2. Despite their seeming dominance, the Pirates only maintain a three-point lead over a very solid Edmonds team.
Peninsula (6-0-1, 19 points, 8-2-1) will next play Skagit Valley (2-4-1, 4-4-1) at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sigmar Field. Like the men, this begins a five-game stretch of home matches for the women.
