EVERETT — Peninsula College’s men’s and women’s road soccer doubleheader played out in much different fashion but they ended with the same result, victories for the Pirates in a road sweep of the Everett Trojans.
The two teams have opened North Division play 2-0 and will make their home debut Saturday.
The defending Northwest Athletic Champion Pirate men, who have won seven straight division titles, came from behind to drop Everett 5-2 Wednesday. Peninsula (2-0, 4-0-1) hosts the Cardinals (1-1, 3-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Pirate women, winners of five straight division crowns and a third-place trophy in 2015, dominated a traditionally-strong Trojan club 4-0 Wednesday. The Pirates (2-0, 3-1-1) tackle Skagit Valley (0-2, 0-3-1) at noon on Saturday.
It’s Kickoff Day at Sigmar Field on Saturday where fans will get their first regular season look at the 2016 Pirates while enjoying a free grilled hot dog.
Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for seniors age 55 and older, veterans and children 13-17, and free to children 12 and younger.
Women Peninsula 4, Everett 0
The Pirates’ only loss in conference play last year came at Kasch Park in Everett. They went on to win out, finishing 14-1 in the North Division, but they took no chances Wednesday – and perhaps no prisoners.
Peninsula jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first minute on a goal by Maddy Parton, a freshman forward from Leavenworth, who spent her high school years attending a team camp on the Peninsula campus.
That goal was assisted by sophomore Hoku Afong.
The Pirates made it 2-0 15 minutes later on a goal by Jazmin Ramos, a freshman midfielder from Newbury Park, Calif.
Everett managed to keep the Peninsula women out of its net for most of the second half until sophomore forward Ellie Small, who scored 10 goals last year, tallied her first goal of 2016 in the 78th minute, assisted by freshman Sarah Reiber.
The Pirates added one final score in the 83rd minute when Afong earned her second assist, getting the ball to Bri Vallente, a sophomore forward from Waikoloa, Hawaii, who put it home to make it 4-0.
Peninsula keeper Akari Hoshino, a walk-on from Tokyo, Japan, earned the shutout with four saves.
Men Peninsula 5, Everett 2
For the third time in five matches, the Pirates dug themselves a hole early and had to climb back out. Everett scored twice in the first half to shock the visitors, but the Peninsula men rallied with five unanswered goals in the second half to win going away.
The first goal came five minutes into the second half when Salvador Vargas put a corner kick into the box, Maron Nava crossed it back where sophomore defender Jose Soto, of Ontario, California, headed it into the Trojan goal.
Peninsula got the equalizer in the 66th minute when Soto played a ball over the back line for Juan Carrillo, a freshman from San Jose, California, who beat a defender off the dribble and slotted the ball into the right corner.
The Pirates then took the lead for the first time in the match when Vargas bombed one off the left post and into the Everett goal.
The Peninsula men then added insurance goals from Adrian Benitez, who beat four defenders off the dribble for an outstanding individual goal in the 77th minute, and a final goal from Kevin Medina, assisted by Vargas.
Pirate goalkeepers Brannon Dwyer and Sergio Uribe combined for two saves to get the win.
