COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula men, women post shutouts in season openers

Teams shine at NWAC Friendlies

EUGENE, Ore. — The Peninsula men’s and women’s soccer teams each picked up impressive 3-0 victories against top competition at the NWAC Friendlies at Lane Community College on Saturday.

The Pirate women (1-0-0) defeated the host Lane Titans, last season’s South Region champions, 3-0.

Sophomore Hoku Afong put Peninsula on the board in the 13th minute, scoring off an assist from classmate Cierra Hamilton.

Kelly Kevershan made it 2-0 Pirates when she sent home a shot on an assist by Coby Yoshimura 10 minutes before halftime.

Marriah Perez, an NCAA transfer from Division II UC-Riverside, netted an insurance goal in the 55th.

Akari Hoshino saved two shots to record the shutout in goal for Peninsula.

The Pirates face Highline (0-1-0) today at 10 a.m.

The Thunderbirds ended Peninsula’s season in the NWAC semifinals last November.

Highline fell 2-0 to Spokane on Saturday.

Peninsula 3, Clark 0

The Pirate men (1-0-0) scored three goals in the final 20 minutes of the first half to put down the Penguins.

Kevin Medina found the net on an unassisted goal in the 25th minute, Adrian Benitez set up Juan Carillo’s score in the 36th minute and Alex Ramos added the clincher with a minute left in the first half.

Sergio Uribe had three saves in goal to earn the clean sheet for Peninsula.

The Pirates play Highline (1-0-0) at noon today.

The Thunderbirds beat Spokane 2-0 on Saturday.
