COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula men join Pirate women as North Region champs

EDMONDS — The Peninsula College men’s soccer team joined the women’s squad and made it a North Region double with a 1-0 division-championship clinching win over Edmonds on Wednesday.

Defender Edgar Tavares’ 28th minute goal stood up and Pirate goalkeeper Evan Scholes earned the shutout, as the stingy Peninsula defense allowed just one shot on goal.

The Pirates (11-1-1, 14-1-1) sealed a first-round bye in the NWAC Tournament with the win.

Peninsula will host the winner of a game between the East No. 3 and the West No. 2 at Wally Sigmar Field on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Before that, the Pirates will host Whatcom (8-4-1, 9-6-1) for Sophomore Day on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Peninsula is ranked second in the most recent edition of the NWAC Men’s Soccer Coaches Poll behind West Region-champ Tacoma (13-0-1).

Whatcom is ranked fourth in the poll and split a pair of games with the Pirates earlier this season.

Women’s Game Peninsula 1, Edmonds 0

EDMONDS — Port Angeles’ Kyrsten McGuffey scored in stoppage time before intermission and the goal held up as the Pirates (12-0-0, 16-0-0) remained undefeated.

Peninsula didn’t allow a shot by the Tritons in the contest.

The Pirates are back to the No. 1 spot in the most recent NWAC Women’s Soccer Coaches Poll which was released Wednesday.

Peninsula hosts seventh-ranked Whatcom (7-2-4, 10-2-4) at noon Saturday at Wally Sigmar Field.

The Orcas have clinched the North Region’s second seed to the NWAC Tournament.
